Flattening the Org Chart - Are SAP Programme Managers Next?

Let’s talk about a taboo topic in SAP delivery.
AI isn’t just crunching data anymore.
It’s nudging employees. Making decisions.
Challenging the org chart itself.

And here’s what Gartner predicts:
“Through 2026, 20% of organisations will use AI to flatten their structure — eliminating over half of current middle-management positions.”
Which makes me wonder…
In complex SAP programmes, where does that leave the Programme Manager?
The central orchestrator. The buffer between the board and the delivery trenches.
The person who’s meant to spot risk, motivate the team, hold the vision.
If AI starts replacing the daily status updates, timelines, risk registers and dashboards —
Do we still need someone at the centre? Personally, I believe we do. But not the same kind.
We need strategic, insight-driven leaders who:
Use AI for visibility, not micromanagement
Focus on people, blockers and motivation
Know when to intervene — and when to trust the system
That’s exactly why we built ORBiTL.
Not to replace PMs — but to free them up from spreadsheet hell and firefighting.
So here’s my question:
In a world of AI-enhanced delivery, what should the Programme Manager of the future look like?
Would love to hear what others think.
